What Is Anxiety

The term anxiety has been grossly misinterpreted as a shy type of a personality or an avoidant personality. Since anxiety has never been understood at its core, it has been challenging to detect and treat. The recent awareness of mental health at drug rehabilitation centres all over the world has allowed us to educate ourselves and either get help or help someone else to overcome this obstacle. Help may be found at Rehabs in India or Detox centres.

Anxiety disorder is caused by a majority of factors such as:

  • Environmental factors: Stress in the environment can make a person susceptible to anxiety.
  • Genetics: People who have family members with an anxiety disorder are more likely to have one themselves.
  • Medical factors: Side effects of medication, stress from a medical condition that causes pain or lifestyle adjustments can cause anxiety.
  • Brain chemistry: Traumatic experiences and genetic factors can alter the structure and function of the brain to react to anxiety triggers more aggressively. Hormones and electrical signals of the brain also have a part to play in creating anxiety disorder in certain people.

There are five major types of anxiety disorders:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder: The person usually experiences chronic worry and tension even if the triggers are minute or inadmissible.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder: It consists of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. Compulsive behaviours such as cleaning, counting are used by the anxious person to prevent obsess thoughts. These compulsive behaviours provide temporary relief.
  • Panic Disorder: The person would experience intense fear and physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness or shortness of breath would accompany it.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: This anxiety disorder develops after a terrifying event in which physical harm occurred or was threatened. The typical victims of PTSD would be soldiers at war.
  • Social anxiety disorder: Social anxiety exhibits avoidant behaviour as the person is excessively self-conscious in everyday social situations or only one type of situation such as fear of speaking or fear of eating or drinking in front of anybody. In its most severe form the person experiences symptoms of anxiety anytime they are around people.

Anxiety shows its ruthless face with its barrage of symptoms. These symptoms may be difficult to understand or accept as a disorder as it has been wrongfully termed as ‘normal’ in everyday situations. Due to increase in rehabs in Pune and Rehabilitation centres in Mumbai the treatment of anxiety has been easier to get done as people suffering from anxiety are mentally imbalanced and tumultuous in their state of mind and hence will not be able to help themselves. Drug rehabilitation centers in India are known to treat many people suffering from severe anxiety distress.

People suffering from anxiety may showcase symptoms such as feeling agitated, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, tense muscles, and trouble falling or staying asleep, panic attacks, avoiding social situations, irrational fear addiction, and anxiety would mostly go hand in hand. Addicts are mostly anxious types and have the genetic makeup of a person with an anxiety disorder. The addict’s temporary relief from the symptoms of anxiety would be drugs or alcohol; this helps relieve the symptoms but creates long term damage to the anxiety going in more profound and getting stronger. An addict will increase his substance intake as the brain over time develops a tolerance for the substances, and it gets more challenging to get the brain in a calm state of mind. Withdrawal from substances will create an overly anxious state for the addict, and he/she may experience panic if the substances are not consumed.

Drug Rehabilitation centers deal specifically with alcohol withdrawal treatments that are primarily known to cause severe anxiety in addicts. Alcohol withdrawal treatments are explicitly available at Rehabs in India as there are teams of medical professionals who will know best how to handle the addict in withdrawal. Anxiety once detected can be treated, and the person may be able to live life with a healthy state of mind. Treatment of anxiety depends on how severe the symptoms may be. For some people with moderate to mild symptoms physical exercise meditation techniques stress management. But for people who are experiencing a much more severe form of anxiety especially mixed with substance abuse long term psychotherapy prescribed psychiatric medication to ease the symptoms and a controlled environment would help. In both the cases of moderate to extreme anxiety disorder a secure, educated support system of family and loved ones is extremely important.
