What Is Addiction

Addiction

Addiction is a disorder characterized by a set of cognitive, behavioural and physiological symptoms in which a person continues using the substance despite significant harmful consequences. This happens because drugs activate the brain’s reward system and produce feelings of pleasure, commonly referred to as a “high”. This “high” is such an intense activation of the reward pathways that normal activities often get neglected and damaging behaviour is still continued by the afflicted individual. Over time, a higher quantity of drugs or alcohol is required by the individual with addiction in order to feel the “high”. This change in brain circuitry can last beyond the detoxification period often results in intense cravings which lead to relapses.
Which substances Are Addictive?
• Alcohol
• Marijuana/Cannabis
• Hallucinogens such as PCP, LSD
• Inhalants like paint thinners and glue
• Opioids like Heroin
• Sedatives, Hypnotics and Anxiolytics
• Stimulants like Cocaine, Methamphetamines
• Tobacco
What Are the Symptoms Of Addiction?
• Cravings to use the substance despite harmful consequences.
• Impaired control; unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control substance abuse.
• A need for the increased amount of substance to get “high”, over a period of time, due to increased drug tolerance.
• Persistent social and interpersonal problems.
What Are the Treatment Options?
Treatment for addiction requires a holistic approach which starts with de-addiction and results in rehabilitation. Medication is used to control drug craving and relieve severe withdrawal symptoms in the initial stages of detoxification. Short-term and long-term therapeutic interventions at a De-addiction & Rehabilitation Facility can help the afflicted individual understand their behaviour patterns, intrinsic motives and the workings of the disorder. Support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous further help towards a sustained recovery.
Each individual is unique and treatment which is designed taking this into consideration is generally far more effective. However, for most people, a combination of group and individual therapy, conducted at a safe environment of a de-addiction and rehabilitation facility, is found to be most effective.
