Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Jalandhar
Jalandhar is an ancient city in Punjab, once the capital of the state; and is known for its places of worship, a booming sports equipment industry, shopping venues and delicious cuisine. The state of Punjab has steadily gained it's reputation as the drug hub of India. Punjab has infamously been plagued with a long term addiction problem. The rise of drug dependence among the youth of Jalandhar has become a major problem. Being in close promimity to the borders of Afghanistan, Jalandhar acts as an entry point and distribution hub for drugs. Hence there is a high percentage of population that is dependent on drugs. It is not just the youth, the drug problem in Jalandhar is rampant across class, age, gender and other socioeconomic differences.
A study conducted on 400 adolescents and young adults (11-35 years of age) from 15 villages in Jalandhar reported that 65.5% of the adults were illicit substance abusers (Sharma, et al. 2017). Out of them, 41.8% were alcohol users, 21.3% tobacco users and 20.8% were heroin users, which are staggering numbers. The prevalence of nonalcohol and nontobacco substance abuse was 34.8%. They also found that drug abuse was associated with illiteracy, the male gender and age above 30 years. The National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre, AIIMS, conducted the Punjab Opioid Dependency Survey which showed that there are 8.6 lakh opioid users and 2.3 lakh opioid- dependents in Punjab.
Alcohol addiction in Punjab and Jalandhar is quite prevalent. But drug addiction is a very concerning problem because every third person in the state is hooked to drugs other than tobacco and alcohol. There is also a high prevalence of heroin and intravenous drug abuse.
Treatment for Drug and Alcohol addiction in Jalandhar
Due to the rising problem of addiction, the Department of Health and Family Welfare, under the National Mental Health programme; had launched many centers to help addicts get treatment. Deaddiction centers mainly focused on detox, management of withdrawal symptoms and helping them live a sober life. Pharmacological treatment combined with educating people about the consequences of addiction is the approach of many of these deaddiction centers. Counselling is also provided to help addicts cultivate new thought and behavior patterns and promote a life of recovery. The government has also launched Outpatient-opiod-assisted treatment (OOAT) centres and Opioid Substitution centers (OST). These centers are exclusively for opioid addicts and they recieve pharmacological treatment to help them overcome the physical dependence on opioid. These centers were a success as many addicts and their families came to seek treatment. During the Lockdown imposed due to COVID-19 in 2020; the narcotics supply was hampered which led to an increase in the number of addicts in government-run deaddiction centers. Around 1500 admissions occurred in a period of four weeks in the 10 Outpatient-Opioid-Assisted treatment centers (OOATS) of the district.
