The Medical Detox Programme.
Our medical detox programme is the safe, supervised first step of recovery — where alcohol and drugs are cleared from the body under round-the-clock clinical care. Delivered within one of the most trusted rehabilitation centres in India, medically supervised detox controls withdrawal, prevents dangerous complications, and stabilises the body so real treatment can begin. It is the medical foundation every programme at ZorbaCare is built on.
Detox clears the body — the safe way, the supervised way
Medical detox is the supervised process of clearing alcohol or drugs from the body while safely managing the withdrawal that follows. For anyone who is physically dependent, this stage is not optional — and it is not something to attempt alone. It usually takes 7 to 10 days, with the hardest phase in the first 24 to 72 hours.
When you stop a substance the body has come to rely on, it reacts. For alcohol, benzodiazepines and opioids in particular, that reaction can mean seizures, dangerous blood-pressure shifts or delirium tremens — a life-threatening emergency. Medical supervision is exactly what stands between a safe detox and a crisis. Both drug addiction treatment and alcohol addiction treatment begin here.
Detox is the essential first phase, but it is only the beginning. Clearing the substance treats the physical dependence; the residential rehabilitation programme that follows is what treats the addiction itself — which is why our detox never stands alone. Families choose ZorbaCare, a trusted rehab centre in India, precisely for that continuity of care.
When medical detox is necessary — not optional
Not everyone in recovery needs a medically supervised detox — but for physical dependence, it is the difference between safety and serious risk. These are the situations where it is essential.
Daily alcohol dependence
If the body has come to need alcohol to function, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Alcohol withdrawal is among the most medically risky — and needs supervision.
Opioid or heroin use
Opioid withdrawal is rarely fatal but intensely painful, and where relapse risk is highest. Medication makes it manageable and keeps people in treatment.
Prescription & sedative use
Benzodiazepines and similar sedatives must be tapered carefully. Stopping abruptly can trigger seizures — this is never a detox to attempt unsupervised.
Failed home attempts
If stopping at home has meant unbearable withdrawal and a fast return to using, a medically supervised detox removes both the danger and the pain.
Long-term heavy use
The longer and heavier the dependence, the higher the withdrawal risk. Extended use calls for close medical monitoring, not guesswork.
Any physical dependence
Whenever stopping a substance brings on withdrawal symptoms, detox should be supervised. We will assess your situation honestly and tell you what is safe.
The withdrawal timeline, stage by stage
Every person and substance is different, but detox tends to follow a recognisable arc. Knowing what is coming — and being safely supported through it — takes much of the fear away.
Onset · 6–24 hours
The first symptoms appear — anxiety, restlessness, sweating, nausea. Assessment and medication begin immediately to stay ahead of them.
Peak · 24–72 hours
Withdrawal is usually most intense here, and the window of highest medical risk. Round-the-clock monitoring and medication keep it controlled and safe.
Easing · Days 3–5
The worst passes. Physical symptoms begin to settle, sleep and appetite slowly return, and the body starts to stabilise.
Stabilised · Days 5–10
Detox completes. With the body steady and mind clearer, you move straight into the residential programme — no gap, no relapse window.
Timelines vary. Long-term or heavy dependence, and certain substances, can extend detox and its risks. Your plan is set by clinical assessment — never assumed.

What medically supervised detox provides
A supervised detox is not simply a comfortable room. It is a clinical process, delivered by people trained to keep you safe through the riskiest days of recovery.
24-hour monitoring
Vitals, symptoms and comfort are checked around the clock, so any complication is caught early — not discovered too late.
Symptom-controlling medication
Prescribed medication eases withdrawal and, critically, prevents seizures and other dangerous complications before they start.
Physician-led assessment
A doctor evaluates your history, substance and health to build a detox plan matched to your specific level of risk.
Comfort & dignity
Rest, hydration, nutrition and a calm private setting make a hard process as bearable as it can be.
Emotional support
Detox is frightening. Trained staff are present through it, so no one faces the hardest hours alone.
A seamless next step
Detox flows directly into therapy. No gap, no discharge into limbo — the moment most likely to end in relapse is removed.
A safe, calm place to detox
Withdrawal is hard enough. Private rooms, round-the-clock care and quiet surroundings let the body stabilise in comfort and dignity.

Supervised detox vs. going it alone
The same withdrawal, two very different experiences. Medical supervision is what separates a safe, survivable detox from a dangerous one.
- Risk of seizures and delirium tremens
- No one monitoring vitals or complications
- Symptoms uncontrolled and overwhelming
- Near-certain relapse to escape the pain
- Nothing waiting on the other side
- Complications prevented before they start
- Vitals monitored around the clock
- Withdrawal eased with proper medication
- Supported by trained staff, never alone
- Straight into treatment — no relapse gap
Supervised detox vs. detoxing at home
For mild dependence, tapering at home may be possible. But for alcohol, opioids and sedatives, these are the differences that decide whether detox is safe.

The questions we hear most before detox begins. Anything else — just reach out.
For most people, medical detox takes around 7 to 10 days, with the hardest phase in the first 24 to 72 hours. Heavier or longer-term dependence, and certain substances, can extend it. The exact length is set after clinical assessment.
Withdrawal is uncomfortable, but medical supervision changes the experience entirely. Prescribed medication controls the worst symptoms and prevents dangerous complications, so a supervised detox is far more bearable — and far safer — than doing it alone.
You can, but it rarely works. Detox treats the physical dependence, not the addiction behind it — which is why detox-only has a very high relapse rate. We strongly recommend detox flows straight into a full residential programme, and we build it that way by design.
For mild dependence sometimes, but for alcohol, benzodiazepines and opioids, unsupervised home detox can be genuinely dangerous — even life-threatening. If there is any physical dependence, it should be done under medical supervision. We will tell you honestly which applies to your situation.
You move directly into the therapeutic programme — individual and group therapy, dual-diagnosis care where needed, and relapse-prevention work. There is no gap and no discharge into limbo, because that gap is exactly where relapse tends to happen.
Alcohol, benzodiazepines and opioids carry the highest withdrawal risk and should always be supervised. Stimulants and cannabis are less physically dangerous but still benefit from a structured, supported detox. If in doubt, assume supervision is needed and let us assess.
Completely. Confidentiality is central to how we operate, from the first call through admission and aftercare. For many families, that anonymity is the main reason they choose to travel for treatment.
