What It Is

More than sadness — and more common than anyone admits

Depression — clinically, major depressive disorder — is a persistent low mood and loss of interest that lasts for weeks or longer and interferes with work, relationships, sleep and daily functioning. It is not a passing sadness you can simply “snap out of,” and it is not a character flaw. It is a medical condition with real biological, psychological and social roots.

In India, depression is often hidden behind stigma — dismissed as weakness, laziness or a lack of gratitude. Men in particular are told to “be strong,” so their depression shows up as irritability, anger, overwork or substance use rather than sadness. The result: the average person waits over four years before seeking help, and the vast majority never get treatment at all.

The most important truth about depression is this: it is one of the most treatable conditions in medicine. With proper mental health care in India — psychiatrist-led therapy, and medication where needed — more than 80% of people improve significantly. Depression also affects everyone who loves the person living with it, so family is part of our approach from the start. And when depression drives alcohol or drug use, our dual-diagnosis programme treats both together — often the piece other treatment missed.

Understanding and treating depression — ZorbaCare
Signs & Symptoms

How depression actually shows up

If five or more of these have been present most days for two weeks or longer, it may be depression — and it is worth speaking to someone. These are the signs we see most often.

Persistent low mood

A heavy sadness, emptiness or hopelessness that lingers most of the day, most days — and does not lift with rest or good news.

Loss of interest

Things that once brought joy — work, people, hobbies — feel flat or pointless. This loss of pleasure is one of depression’s clearest signs.

Sleep & energy changes

Sleeping far too much or too little, waking exhausted, and a deep fatigue that makes ordinary tasks feel impossibly heavy.

Irritability & anger

Especially in men, depression often looks like short temper, agitation or withdrawal — not tears. It is frequently missed for exactly this reason.

Trouble concentrating

Difficulty focusing, remembering or making decisions — work slips, and simple choices start to feel overwhelming.

Thoughts of self-harm

Feeling that life is not worth living, or thoughts of death or self-harm, are a medical emergency — please reach out now. In India you can call Tele-MANAS on 14416, any time.

How We Treat Depression

Complete mental health care, built around you

There is no single cure for depression — the best outcomes come from combining approaches, tailored to the person and supported by their family. This is how depression treatment works at ZorbaCare.

01

Psychiatric assessment

A consultant psychiatrist understands your history, mood, sleep, risk and any physical or substance factors — then explains exactly what is happening and why.

02

Therapy & medication

Evidence-based psychotherapy such as CBT addresses the thoughts and patterns that sustain depression. Where clinically needed, medication is prescribed and carefully monitored.

03

Routine & wellness

Structure, sleep, movement, nutrition and mindfulness rebuild the daily rhythm depression erodes — the foundation that makes recovery hold.

04

Aftercare & relapse prevention

Recovery continues after discharge. A structured aftercare plan protects your progress and helps you spot and manage early warning signs.

Care is individual. Mild depression may respond to therapy alone; moderate to severe depression often benefits from combined treatment. Your plan is always set by a psychiatrist, never assumed.

Inside The Estate

See where recovery happens

A private residential estate in the Sahyadri hills — the environment is part of the treatment, not a backdrop to it.

Our Approach

The therapies behind lasting recovery

Depression rarely has a single cause, so it is never treated with a single tool. These are the evidence-based components we combine, matched to each person.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT helps you identify and change the thought patterns and behaviours that keep depression going — one of the most effective, best-researched treatments there is.

Medication, where needed

For moderate to severe depression, a psychiatrist may prescribe and carefully monitor antidepressant medication — safely, and always explained clearly.

Individual psychotherapy

One-to-one sessions with a psychologist create a private, judgement-free space to work through the roots of your depression at your own pace.

Lifestyle & wellness

Sleep, movement, nutrition, yoga and mindfulness are structured into daily life — each proven to lift mood and rebuild the rhythm depression erodes.

Group & peer support

Being understood by others who truly get it breaks the isolation of depression — a quietly powerful part of recovery.

Family connection & therapy

Depression isolates people from those who love them most. We bring family back in — helping them understand the illness, rebuild connection, and support recovery through structured family therapy.

The Environment

A calm place to heal

Recovery from depression is easier in the right surroundings. Private rooms, open green space and quiet, unhurried days give the mind room to recover.

The Difference Treatment Makes

Living with it vs. treating it

Untreated, depression tends to deepen and pull away the things that matter most — work, health, and the connection with family. Treated properly, most people recover, and those relationships heal too. This is the difference mental health care makes.

Depression untreated
  • Low mood deepens and becomes harder to shift
  • Distance grows between the person and their family
  • Higher risk of substance use and self-harm
  • Hope fades; the future feels impossible
  • Years lost to something that was treatable

An Honest Comparison

Coping alone vs. structured, professional care

Mild low mood may lift on its own. But when depression persists, willpower and self-help have limits — and these are the differences proper treatment makes.

Coping alone
The right diagnosisNo one to tell whether it is depression, burnout, thyroid, or something else — so the real problem often goes unnamed.
Evidence-based therapyAdvice from the internet or well-meaning friends, without the proven, structured therapy that actually shifts depression.
Medication, if neededNo safe way to know if medication would help, or to have it prescribed and properly monitored.
Daily supportFacing the heaviest days alone, with no structure and no one trained to notice when things get worse.
Risk & safetyWarning signs of self-harm can go unseen — the risk no one should carry without help.
ZorbaCare

Psychiatrist-led care

The right diagnosisA consultant psychiatrist assesses you properly, names exactly what is happening, and rules out other causes.
Evidence-based therapyProven therapies like CBT, delivered by qualified psychologists, target the roots of your depression directly.
Medication, if neededWhere clinically helpful, medication is prescribed and carefully monitored — safely, and fully explained.
Daily supportA consistent team and a supportive community around you every day, so you are never carrying it alone.
Risk & safetyRisk is assessed and managed by professionals, in a safe environment built for recovery.
In Their Own Words

Recovery stories, in their own words

Some journeys are best heard from the people who lived them. Real stories from people who found their way back with ZorbaCare.

Story of loss, pain, and healing.

After losing his wife suddenly, he struggled with alcohol addiction as a way to cope with grief. But over time, he chose to face his pain, seek support, and rebuild his life.

Story of healing, recovery, and hope.

How does a normal working person end up homeless addicted to drugs. That is what happened to me.

Story of strength, struggle, and recovery.

I have lost my love, my job, my family, everything because of my addiction. I thought I would never heal, but now i am more than a year sober.

Story of healing, recovery, and strength.

Started in college as a fun activity from beer to regular frequency drinking. From a life that i loved to out of control drinking.

Common Questions

Common questions about depression

Honest answers to what people most often ask us. Anything else — just reach out.

How do I know if it is depression and not just sadness?

Sadness passes; depression does not. If low mood, loss of interest, and changes in sleep, energy or appetite have lasted most of the day, nearly every day, for two weeks or more — and are affecting your work or relationships — it may be clinical depression. A psychiatric assessment can tell you clearly, and it is always worth checking.

Can depression be treated without medication?

Often, yes. Mild to moderate depression frequently responds well to psychotherapy alone, particularly CBT. Medication is usually considered for moderate to severe depression, or when therapy alone has not been enough. A psychiatrist will recommend what fits your situation — and nothing is prescribed without explaining why.

How long does depression treatment take?

It varies by person and severity. Many people notice meaningful improvement within a few weeks of the right treatment, though a full course of care often runs over some months to make recovery hold. Residential stays are typically a few weeks to a few months. We set realistic expectations from the start — and never over-promise.

Do I need residential treatment, or is outpatient enough?

Many people manage well with outpatient therapy. Residential care is recommended when depression is severe, when there is risk of self-harm, when home is not a supportive environment, or when previous treatment has not worked. A calm, structured setting away from daily pressures can make a real difference. We will give you an honest recommendation either way.

What if there are thoughts of self-harm or suicide?

Please treat this as urgent. If you or someone you love is having thoughts of self-harm or suicide, call Tele-MANAS on 14416 (free, 24×7, across India) or reach us directly right away. These thoughts are a symptom of a treatable illness — not a personal failing — and with the right help, they ease.

How much does depression treatment cost in India?

It depends on the level of care. Outpatient therapy is charged per session; residential treatment is priced by programme and length of stay. We give a clear, written breakdown before you commit to anything — no hidden costs. The best first step is a confidential call to talk through what your situation actually needs.

Is treatment confidential?

Completely. Confidentiality is central to how we operate, from the first call through admission and aftercare. For many families, that anonymity is the main reason they choose to travel for treatment.
