What It Is

When the past will not stay in the past

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops when the mind cannot fully process a frightening or overwhelming experience. The memory stays “live” — intruding as flashbacks and nightmares, driving avoidance of anything that reminds you of it, and keeping the body braced for danger long after the threat has gone. It is not weakness, and it is not something you should be able to “just get over.” It is the nervous system stuck in survival mode.

Trauma is not only combat or disaster. It can follow a serious accident, an assault, sexual violence, the sudden loss of someone you love, a difficult medical event, or childhood abuse and neglect. When trauma is prolonged or repeated — especially in childhood — it can lead to complex PTSD, which is often misread as anxiety, depression or a “personality problem.” Naming it correctly is the first step to healing it.

Here is what matters most: trauma can be healed, even many years later. With trauma-focused PTSD treatment in India — led by EMDR and evidence-based therapy — around two in three people recover, and many more improve significantly. Family support is a powerful part of that, so we involve loved ones from the start. And because trauma so often drives depression, anxiety or substance use, our dual-diagnosis programme treats those together.

Understanding trauma and PTSD — ZorbaCare
Signs & Symptoms

How PTSD actually shows up

PTSD appears across four groups of symptoms — and often when symptoms last more than a month and disrupt daily life. These are the signs we see most often.

Flashbacks & nightmares

Reliving the trauma through vivid flashbacks, intrusive memories or recurring nightmares — as though it is happening again, right now.

Avoidance

Steering clear of people, places, conversations or reminders tied to the trauma — and often avoiding thinking or talking about it at all.

Always on edge

Feeling constantly alert, jumpy or easily startled, unable to relax, with disturbed sleep and irritability — the body braced for a threat that has passed.

Negative shifts in mood

Persistent fear, guilt or shame, numbness, losing interest, and harsh beliefs about yourself or the world — feeling detached from people you love.

Feeling unreal or detached

Dissociation — feeling numb, foggy, outside your own body, or that things around you are not real — a common and distressing way trauma protects the mind.

Numbing with substances

Using alcohol or drugs to quiet the memories or finally sleep is common — and a sign the trauma needs proper care. If distress ever turns to thoughts of self-harm, call Tele-MANAS on 14416, any time.

How We Treat PTSD

Trauma-focused treatment, built around you

Trauma needs a specific, gentle, evidence-based approach — not just talking about it. Our care centres on EMDR and trauma-focused therapy. This is how PTSD care works at ZorbaCare.

01

Assessment & safety

We understand your history at your pace, never forcing disclosure, and first build a sense of safety and stability — the ground all trauma work depends on.

02

EMDR & trauma-focused therapy

EMDR and trauma-focused CBT help the brain finally process the memory, so it loses its emotional charge — the flashbacks fade and the past becomes the past.

03

Calming the nervous system

Grounding, breathwork, yoga and body-based techniques settle a nervous system stuck in survival mode — tools to manage flashbacks and reclaim a feeling of safety.

04

Integration & aftercare

Healing continues as you rebuild trust, relationships and routine. Structured aftercare supports you long after the intensive work is done.

Care is individual. Trauma work moves at your pace, never rushed. EMDR suits many people; others benefit from trauma-focused CBT, with medication where helpful. Your plan is always set by a specialist, never assumed.

Our Approach

The therapies that heal trauma

Trauma lives in the nervous system, so it takes more than talk to release it. These are the evidence-based, trauma-focused tools we combine.

EMDR therapy

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing — a leading trauma therapy. Using guided bilateral stimulation, it helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their intensity.

Trauma-focused CBT

Including approaches like Cognitive Processing Therapy, this gently reshapes the painful beliefs trauma leaves behind — guilt, shame and a sense the world is unsafe.

Grounding & somatic work

Body-based and grounding techniques bring you back to the present when a flashback or dissociation hits — practical skills that restore a sense of control.

Medication where needed

Where helpful, a psychiatrist may prescribe medication to ease sleep, nightmares, anxiety or depression — supporting the therapy, monitored carefully.

Group & peer support

Sharing safely with others who understand trauma dissolves isolation and shame — and rebuilds the trust in people that trauma so often damages.

Family understanding

Trauma affects the whole family. We help loved ones understand the symptoms, respond with patience rather than frustration, and rebuild connection — through family sessions.

The Environment

A safe place to heal

Trauma heals in safety. Private rooms, open green space and calm, predictable days give the nervous system the security it needs to finally settle and process.

The Difference Treatment Makes

Living with it vs. treating it

Untreated, trauma keeps the past alive — running the present through fear, avoidance and numbness. Treated properly, the memory settles and life returns. This is the difference trauma-focused care makes.

Trauma untreated
  • Flashbacks and nightmares keep the trauma alive
  • Life narrows around avoiding every reminder
  • Alcohol or drugs used to numb and to sleep
  • Relationships strain under numbness and mistrust
  • Years lost to something that could be healed
EMDR
helps process trauma
Trauma treated
  • Memories lose their charge; flashbacks fade
  • The body settles out of survival mode
  • Avoided places and people become possible again
  • Tools to ground yourself and feel safe again
  • Trust, connection and a life that feels yours again
An Honest Comparison

“Just move on” vs. trauma-focused care

Trauma does not heal by being ignored or by willpower — and generic advice rarely helps. These are the differences real, trauma-focused treatment makes.

Trying to move on alone
Understanding itSymptoms mistaken for anxiety, depression or a “personality problem” — so the underlying trauma is never named.
The right therapy“Just forget it and move on” — or ordinary talk therapy that can re-traumatise, instead of proven EMDR and trauma-focused work.
CopingNumbing with alcohol or drugs to sleep and forget — which deepens the trauma over time.
SafetyFacing flashbacks and dissociation alone, with no one trained to help you feel safe.
The bigger pictureDepression, anxiety or addiction that grew from the trauma go unaddressed.

Common Questions

Common questions about trauma & PTSD

Honest answers to what people most often ask us. Anything else — just reach out.

What counts as trauma — is mine “bad enough”?

If it overwhelmed your ability to cope, it counts — there is no “bad enough” threshold. Trauma can follow an accident, assault, sexual violence, a sudden loss, a frightening medical event, or childhood abuse and neglect. It is not about how the event looks to others; it is about its impact on you. If frightening memories, avoidance or feeling on edge have lasted more than a month and disrupt your life, it is worth getting help — whatever the cause.

What is EMDR, and how does it treat trauma?

EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing — is a leading, evidence-based trauma therapy. While you briefly recall a traumatic memory, the therapist guides side-to-side eye movements or other bilateral stimulation. This appears to help the brain finally “file” the memory properly, so it loses its emotional intensity. Over sessions, the flashbacks fade and the memory becomes something you can recall without being overwhelmed. Importantly, you do not have to talk through every detail for it to work.

What is complex PTSD (C-PTSD)?

Complex PTSD develops after prolonged or repeated trauma — often childhood abuse, neglect or long-term abusive relationships — rather than a single event. Alongside the usual PTSD symptoms, it brings deep difficulties with emotions, self-worth and relationships, which is why it is often misdiagnosed as anxiety, depression or a personality disorder. It is very treatable, but usually needs a longer, carefully paced, trauma-focused approach — which is exactly how we work.

Can trauma from years ago still be healed?

Yes. It is never too late — trauma from childhood or from decades ago can still be processed and healed. The memory does not have an expiry date, and neither does recovery. Trauma-focused therapies like EMDR work whether the event was last month or thirty years ago. Many people carry old trauma for years, assuming it is just “how they are,” and are surprised how much lighter life becomes once it is properly treated.

Will I have to relive the trauma in detail to get better?

No — and this fear stops many people from seeking help, so it matters. Good trauma treatment never forces you to relive everything in detail. We build safety and coping skills first, and therapies like EMDR work without you having to narrate the whole event. You stay in control of the pace throughout. Feeling safe is the foundation of the work, not something we ask you to sacrifice. If distress ever turns to thoughts of self-harm, call Tele-MANAS on 14416, any time.

How much does PTSD treatment cost in India?

It depends on the level of care. Outpatient EMDR and trauma-focused therapy is charged per session; residential treatment is priced by programme and length of stay, and helps when trauma is severe or complex. We give a clear, written breakdown up front, with no hidden costs. The best first step is a confidential call to talk through what your situation needs.

Is treatment confidential?

Completely. Confidentiality is central to how we operate, from the first call through admission and aftercare. For many families, that anonymity is the main reason they choose to travel for treatment.
