What It Is

When the harder you try to sleep, the worse it gets

Insomnia is difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early — despite having the time and opportunity to rest — along with tiredness, poor focus and low mood during the day. When it happens most nights for months, it becomes chronic insomnia. Sleep-wake disorders also include problems like sleep apnea, restless legs and disrupted body-clock rhythms, each with its own cause and treatment.

Chronic insomnia has a cruel twist: the more you worry about not sleeping, the more wired you become — until the bed itself becomes a place of stress rather than rest. Sleeping pills feel like the obvious fix, but for long-term insomnia they mask the problem and can create dependency. The evidence is clear that the most effective lasting treatment is not medication but a structured therapy called CBT-I, which retrains the mind and body to sleep naturally again.

Sleep and mental health are deeply linked, in both directions: poor sleep worsens anxiety and depression, and those conditions in turn wreck sleep. That is exactly why sleep is best treated within proper mental health care in India, not in isolation. At ZorbaCare we treat the insomnia and anything feeding it together — so you do not just sleep better, you feel better.

Understanding insomnia and sleep-wake disorders — ZorbaCare
Signs & Symptoms

How a sleep disorder shows up

Poor sleep affects far more than the night — it shapes the whole day. These are the signs that sleep problems have become something worth treating.

Trouble falling asleep

Lying awake for a long time despite being tired, mind racing, unable to switch off and drift into sleep.

Waking through the night

Waking repeatedly, or waking too early and being unable to fall back asleep — so sleep never feels deep or restful.

Dreading bedtime

Anxiety about sleep itself — watching the clock, fearing another bad night — so the bed becomes associated with stress instead of rest.

Daytime exhaustion

Tiredness, low energy and sleepiness through the day — but often still unable to nap or rest, running on empty.

Poor focus & low mood

Difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, irritability and low mood — the daytime cost of nights that never restore you.

Relying on pills or alcohol

Depending on sleeping pills or alcohol to fall asleep — a sign the problem needs proper treatment, not just masking. If distress ever turns to thoughts of self-harm, call Tele-MANAS on 14416, any time.

How We Treat Sleep Disorders

Treating the cause, so sleep returns naturally

Lasting sleep does not come from a pill — it comes from resetting the mind and body’s relationship with sleep. This is how sleep care works at ZorbaCare.

01

Sleep assessment

We review your sleep history and patterns, and check for underlying causes — anxiety, depression, or physical issues like sleep apnea or thyroid — so treatment targets the real problem.

02

CBT-I — the core treatment

CBT for Insomnia rebuilds a healthy link between bed and sleep, resets your body clock, and dismantles the anxious thoughts that keep you awake — the proven first-line treatment.

03

Routine & relaxation

Sleep-friendly routines, relaxation and mindfulness, and sensible habits around light, caffeine and screens settle an over-active mind — the daily foundations of good sleep.

04

Treating what feeds it

Where anxiety or depression is driving the insomnia, we treat that too — and where medication has a short-term role, it is used carefully. Structured aftercare keeps sleep on track.

Care is individual. CBT-I helps most people with chronic insomnia; some sleep disorders, like suspected sleep apnea, may need specific tests or referral. Your plan is always set by a specialist, never assumed.

Our Approach

The tools that restore natural sleep

Good sleep is rebuilt, not forced. These are the evidence-based components we combine to treat the root of poor sleep.

CBT-I

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia — the proven first-line treatment. It resets your sleep drive and body clock, and breaks the anxious thought patterns that keep you awake.

Stimulus control

Rebuilding the link between bed and sleep — so your body learns bed means rest, not hours of frustrated wakefulness and worry.

Relaxation & wind-down

Breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and mindfulness calm a racing mind at night — practical skills that make falling asleep easier.

Sleep hygiene & routine

Sensible, sustainable habits around light, caffeine, screens and a consistent schedule — the everyday foundations that protect healthy sleep.

Treating the root cause

Where anxiety, depression or stress is driving the insomnia, treating it is what makes sleep return for good — not just for a night.

Careful use of medication

Sleeping pills can have a short-term role, but are not a lasting fix. Where medication is used, it is prescribed and monitored carefully by a psychiatrist — never the whole plan.

The Environment

A calm place for rest to return

Rest returns more easily in the right setting. Private rooms, open green space and calm, well-paced days help reset an exhausted body clock and quiet a restless mind.

The Difference Treatment Makes

Living with it vs. treating it

Untreated, chronic insomnia grinds down health, mood and focus — and pills only mask it. Treated at the root, natural sleep genuinely returns. This is the difference the right care makes.

Insomnia untreated
  • Sleepless nights become a fixed, dreaded pattern
  • Exhaustion erodes focus, mood and health
  • Growing dependence on sleeping pills or alcohol
  • Anxiety and low mood deepen with the sleep loss
  • The bed becomes a place of stress, not rest
CBT-I
treats the root cause
Insomnia treated
  • Falling and staying asleep becomes natural again
  • Energy, focus and mood recover through the day
  • Freedom from reliance on pills to sleep
  • Lasting tools that protect sleep for life
  • Restful nights — and better days that follow
An Honest Comparison

Sleeping pills vs. treating the root cause

The odd bad night passes on its own. But for chronic insomnia, pills mask the problem while CBT-I fixes it. These are the differences the right approach makes.

Common Questions

Common questions about sleep disorders

Honest answers to what people most often ask us. Anything else — just reach out.

When does poor sleep become a disorder worth treating?

The odd bad night is normal. It becomes chronic insomnia — and worth treating — when trouble falling or staying asleep happens at least three nights a week for three months or more, and affects your day through tiredness, poor focus or low mood. At that point it rarely fixes itself, and structured treatment like CBT-I makes a real, lasting difference. You do not have to wait until you are desperate to ask for help.

Can I fix insomnia without sleeping pills?

Yes — and for chronic insomnia, that is actually the better route. The evidence is clear that CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia) is more effective than sleeping pills for long-term insomnia, and unlike pills it has no dependency risk and treats the root cause. Sleeping pills can help briefly in a crisis, but they mask the problem rather than solving it. Most people can rebuild natural sleep without relying on medication long-term.

What is CBT-I, and how does it work?

CBT-I is a structured, short-term therapy designed specifically for insomnia. It works on several fronts: rebuilding the association between your bed and sleep, gently resetting your sleep drive and body clock, and challenging the anxious thoughts about sleep that keep you awake. It also covers relaxation and healthy sleep habits. Unlike a pill, it gives you skills that keep working long after treatment ends — which is why it is recommended as the first-line treatment worldwide.

Why can’t I sleep even when I’m exhausted?

It is one of insomnia’s cruelest features. Usually it is because your mind and body have become wired for wakefulness at bedtime — often through anxiety about sleep itself. You are tired, but the moment you lie down the mind races and the body tenses, because bed has become linked with stress and effort rather than rest. This is exactly the loop CBT-I is designed to break, by rebuilding a calm, automatic association with sleep.

Is my insomnia linked to anxiety or depression?

Very possibly — the link runs both ways. Anxiety and depression are among the most common causes of insomnia, and in turn, poor sleep makes anxiety and low mood worse, creating a cycle. That is why treating sleep in isolation often fails. As a mental health centre, we assess and treat both together: the insomnia and whatever is feeding it. Often, when the underlying anxiety or depression is addressed, sleep improves alongside it. If distress ever turns to thoughts of self-harm, call Tele-MANAS on 14416.

How much does insomnia treatment cost in India?

CBT-I is usually delivered as a short course of outpatient sessions, which makes it affordable and time-limited — and because it treats the root cause, it often saves the ongoing cost and risk of long-term sleeping pills. Where more support is needed, we price it clearly by programme. We give a written breakdown up front, with no hidden costs. The best first step is a confidential call.

Is treatment confidential?

Completely. Confidentiality is central to how we operate, from the first call through admission and aftercare. For many families, that anonymity is the main reason they choose to travel for treatment.
